Olia Hercules a well- known Ukrainian cookery writer came to promote her new book – a biography of her family’s life. Olia was invited by The Kitchen Table bookstore and they in turn invited local Ukrainians.

The Assembly Room at the Grosvenor Arms was full, there were copies of Olia’s book Strong Roots to be signed and to buy and, before and after the conversations, singing with the local Ukrainian community.

A day of community and friendship in Somerset as we visited Cheddar, the Gorge, Wookey Hole and Wells Cathedral City.

Independence Day of Ukraine was marked by local Ukrainians in August.

We shared food and thoughts over the trestle tables at Gilingham Social Club.

With wonderful food created and served by The Hammouds’ Kitchen , a fun and challenging quiz and generously donated prizes the evening was enjoyed by everyone.

Ivan Kupala is a magical event.

Ukrainian traditions dictate that people float flowers down rivers to divine romantic futures. People jump over bonfires to demonstrate strength, faith, and vitality and look for a “fern flower” which is said to only appear on the night of Kupala, and which legend holds will bring the finder power and good luck.

For local Ukrainians it is a chance to come together as a community away from home.

Masliana is a traditional celebration in Ukraine that marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring.

It is typically a week-long celebration leading up to the beginning of Lent, also known as Pancake Week, and is celebrated with lots of food, music, and traditional customs.
