Ivana Kupala 2026
Ivana Kupala is a traditional midsummer festival celebrated in Ukraine. It combines very ancient pre-Christian summer solstice customs with the later Christian feast of the birth of St John the Baptist (Ivan = John).
For us it is a chance to spend time together with the very special community of Ukrainians in North Dorset.
Glad to gather in such a stunning location.
Wreath making is a lovely tradition which we were able to follow with the help of Sprout and Flower of Mere and our host Sara.
Wreaths or ‘Vinok’ are made from willow fronds, flowers and herbs.
There are always fun games led by the wonderful Anna U.
A game of sticky grapes!
The traditional fire is lit to toast our marshmallows and for couples to leap, to prove their lasting bond.
Finally our wreaths float in the clear springwater of Sara’s home, and the candles light the close of evening.
