November Quiz Night
A great crowd joined in the fun at our latest quiz night at Motcombe Memorial Hall.
Our quizzes start at 6.00 because there are always many exciting raffle prizes to win and therefore many tickets to sell.
The quiz format helps teams work together on the questions and the picture clues in a number of simultaneous rounds. And after the first 4 rounds the 11 teams were close, well close except for ‘The Hounds’ who had opened up a 6 point lead.
After 4 rounds, usually at 7.00, we eat, or should I say feast because the Syrian Buffet provided by Bayan and Imad was delicious, nourishing, beautifully presented and loved by everyone. There was ample for seconds and even thirds for some people. The delight on people’s faces when the fresh pistachio baklava triangles were served was something to see. We thought we were full, but all squeezed another mouthful in.
The quiz was not without controversy.
Should the highest egg fall score have stood if the egg didn’t reach the ground?
Since when was Wardour Castle in Dorset?
Does a view of West Bay include Golden Cap?
Is a Papaya a Paw Paw or was it impossible to tell from a magnified photo?
Despite the controversial nature of the issues, the players handled themselves impecably and good spirits and humour were maintained.
Finally the results all hung on whether balls would fall or stop. This is where ‘The Forgottens’ leapt forward with a massive score of 16.
‘The Hounds’ who had been chased by all teams after there early lead, had steadily built on their lead with high scores on the ‘Food’, ‘People’ and ‘Dorset’ rounds. With 12 points on the Falling Balls they eventually won the quiz with 116 points. Second were ‘The Forgottens’ on 106 and joint third were ‘Motcombe and Wise’ and ‘Rascals’ on 104.
The Hounds had the grand prize of a hamper kindly donated by Virginia Hayward and also the glory, not the first time a team led by Christine had won!
Our £5 lottery also made a big winner of Sarah, a friend and regular quizzer who won the £100 prize.
Thanks to everyone who came along and made the evening a pleasurable and profitable one. We raised £389 and our spirits in general.
Thanks too, to Sam and Gail on the Bar, to Graham for popping out on a cold night to reassure us about the AV and especially to Carolyn, Nicky and Joyce who kept us up to date with accurate scoring.
