Anti-Racism Policy

Shaftesbury Refugee Group Anti-Racism Policy

Introduction

Shaftesbury Refugee Group (SRG) is committed to fostering an environment where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. We recognise that racism, both individual and structural, undermines our values and the communities we support.

This policy outlines our commitment to anti-racism and the steps we will take to ensure equity and inclusion in our work.

Purpose

This policy aims to:

  • Affirm SRG’s stance against racism in all its forms.

  • Provide guidance to trustees, volunteers, beneficiaries, and partners.

  • Set out how concerns or incidents will be addressed.

Scope

This policy applies to all those involved in SRG’s activities, including trustees, volunteers, beneficiaries, and partners.

Definitions

Racism: Prejudice, discrimination, or hostility based on race, ethnicity, or cultural background. This includes both direct and indirect acts, as well as institutional or structural racism.

Anti-racism: The active process of identifying and opposing racism by changing policies, behaviours, systems, and attitudes.

We acknowledge the definition of a racist incident used in the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry: “Any incident which is perceived to be racist by the victim or any other person.”

Our Commitment

SRG commits to:

  • Education and Awareness: We will continue to learn and reflect on how racism operates within society and our sector, providing volunteers and trustees with resources and guidance as needed.

  • Inclusive Practice: Our support and programmes will be delivered in ways that are respectful and inclusive of all racial and ethnic backgrounds. We will challenge language or behaviour that undermines this.

  • Representation and Listening: We value lived experience and welcome feedback from the communities we support, to ensure their voices shape how we work.

  • Zero Tolerance: Racist behaviour or language will not be tolerated. Anyone representing SRG is expected to uphold these standards. Concerns will be taken seriously and handled appropriately.

Reporting and Response

Incidents or concerns can be reported in confidence to the Chair or Secretary. SRG will respond with care and fairness, ensuring those affected are supported.

Monitoring and Review

The trustees will review this policy annually, informed by feedback from stakeholders and any incidents or lessons learned.
